This US highway passes through the southern section of the proposed Douglas-Fir National Monument. It is paved all the way, giving easy access to Iron Mountain, known for its spectacular wildflowers in early July. There are numerous campgrounds along the way and fishing access to the South Santiam River. The eastern section above Upper Soda is closed in winter due to heavy snowfall. That section is also prone to landslides and can be closed for road repair at any time of the year. Go to the website, "Tripcheck" (Oregon) to find out if the road is closed for construction. |
