Campgrounds, Cabins and other places to stay in the Doug

To get the most out of a visit to the Doug, consider an overnight stay. You can stay in Detroit or Sweet Home.
If you want to get into the forest, you can camp in one of several campgrounds operated by the Forest Service and the BLM. This is a list of those campgrounds, along with links to the government sites with more information on the campgrounds.
Campsites are mostly designed for tents only. Some sites may be reserved, some are available on a first come first served basis. Check the campsite web page for details for each campsite. For the Forest Service sites, reserve online at www.recreation.gov or phone 1.877.444.6777.

Breitenbush Campground Directions: From Detroit, Oregon, at the intersection of State Route 22 and Forest Service Road 46, take Road 46 north and continue 9.3 miles to the campground on the right.
Elk Lake Campground Currently closed due to downed timber.
Humbug Campground Directions: From Detroit, Oregon, travel southeast on State Highway 22 for 16 miles to Marion Forks. Turn left at the Marion Forks Fish Hatchery sign. Day Use Area is adjacent to the Fish Hatchery and Marion Creek. Campground is behind the Fish Hatchery.
Marion Forks Campground and Day Use Area Directions: From Detroit, Oregon, travel southeast on State Highway 22 for 16 miles to Marion Forks. Turn left at the Marion Forks Fish Hatchery sign. Day Use Area is adjacent to the Fish Hatchery and Marion Creek. Campground is behind the Fish Hatchery.
Riverside at Detroit Campground Directions: From Detroit, OR, take Route 22 toward Sisters. Go 14.2 miles to the campground on right side of the road.
Whispering Falls Campground Directions: 8.3 miles southeast of Detroit, Oregon: From Detroit, follow Highway 22 southeast for 8.3 miles to Whispering Falls Campground on the right.
House Rock Campground Directions: From Sweet Home, follow Highway 20 east for 26 miles to Forest Road 2044 and turn right. Follow Forest Road 2044 for a half mile and turn right, then drive for another quarter mile. House Rock Campground is across the Sheep Creek bridge.
Trout Creek Campground Directions: From Sweet Home, OR, follow Highway 20 east for 19 miles and look for signs for the Trout Creek Campground.
Yukwah Campground From Sweet Home, OR, follow Highway 20 east for 21 miles and look for signs for Yukwah Campground.
Fernview Group Campground GROUPS ONLY Directions: From Sweet Home, Oregon, follow Highway 20 east for 22 miles and look for signs for the Fernview Group Site.
Yellowbottom BLM Campground NOTE: Currently no water at this campground. Directions: From Sweet Home, Oregon travel turn left onto the Quartzville Road and travel about 24 miles to Yellowbottom Recreation Site.
Along the Quartzville Recreational Corridor, camping is allowed in "undeveloped" sites, which are marked pullouts along the road. Not all the pullouts are designated for camping, only those spaces with a campfire circle.

Detroit Lake is just outside the proposed National Monument. There are several campgrounds around the lake.
Cove Creek Campground
Hoover Campground
Piety Island Campground
Santiam Flats Campground
Southshore Campground

Detroit Lake is located 50 miles East of Salem, Oregon. To reach the lake, take Hwy 22 East exit from I-5 at Salem. The town of Detroit is located on the East end of the lake.


Special stays.
For an unusual stay, try hiking into the Gold Butte Lookout. Unfortunately this location is currently closed.
A few campgrounds offer RV sites: In the Doug, try the Yukwah campground.
Along Detroit Lake, the Cove Creek Campground and the Hoover Campground have some RV sites.
