Length: 1.5 miles Difficulty: Moderate/ Difficult Elevation Gain: 4,800 - 5,800 feet [WS 10] FS: #3392 Coffin Lookout |
This trail meanders through an old historic natural fire providing
views along the trail. Young noble fir and sub-alpine fir are
scattered along the way. The trail offers panoramic views of the
Cascades, along with wildflower and wildlife viewing. The trail ends
at Coffin Mountain Lookout. The lookout is staffed in the summer, so
don't bother the occupant. The lookout does not provide potable
water, restroom facilities or garbage services. William Sullivan recommends climbing the nearby Bachelor Mountain Trail instead, because it offers better views of the High Cascades. |
Directions: From Detroit, Oregon, travel East on Highway 22 for
approximately 24.5 miles to Forest Road 11 (Straight Creek Road /
Quartzville Scenic Byway). Turn right on Forest Road 11, travel for 4 miles to Forest Road 1168 (Do not turn at the first 1168 junction; the eastern half of Forest Road 1168 is very rough). Turn right on second junction with Forest Road 1168, travel for about 3.5 miles to trailhead (trail begins to the right of Forest Road 430 near its junction with Forest Road 1168) |
